and getting to have dinner with us last night and hanging out with us we tried getting to work out where she could hang out with some of the women but their schedules just didn't work out and so I'm
thankful for all the women that were able to be a part of the service today and but if you have your Bibles will be in Luke chapter 11 and we'll look at 13 verses this morning
Luke 11 13 verses that we're going to look at this is the prayer of Jesus for his disciples his model of prayer and it's sort of like like Vicki said it goes along with the entire flow of the
service today just looking at prayer and so if you have your Bibles there we'll stand in honor of reading God's Word and we'll jump into the message today for today's service the Bible says he was praying in a
certain place this is talking about Jesus and when he finished one of his disciples looked at him and said Lord teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples he said to them whenever you pray say
Father your name be honored as holy your kingdom come give us each day our daily bread and forgive us of our sins as we also forgive everyone who is debted to us and do not bring us into temptation
he also said to them suppose one of you has a friend and goes into him at midnight and says friend lend me three loaves of bread because a friend of mine is on a journey and he has come
to me and I don't have anything to offer him then he will answer and say to him don't bother me the door is already locked and my children have gone to bed and I can't get up and give
you anything I tell you even though he won't get up and give him anything because of his friend yet because of his friend's shameless boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs so I
Asking, Seeking, Knocking
say to you ask and it will be given seek and you will find knock and the door will be open to you for everyone who asks receives and the one who finds and the one who knocks the door
will be open what father among you if his son asks for a fish you will give him a steak instead of a fish or if he asks for an egg you will give him a scorpion if you then
are evil know how to give good gifts to your children how much more will your heavenly father give the holy spirit to those who ask him let us pray father we love you we think what you've done for
us thank you for your blessings I pray God that you'd have your will and way in the rest of the service thank you for the ladies that have had the wonderful opportunity to to lead today and I pray
that your name be lifted high in your name we pray amen you can be seated as I was studying through this passage in preparation in the series that we're going through of when God's people pray I think it
was one of the most convicting things in this passage of Luke chapter 2 not that Jesus prayed I think we see all throughout passages of scripture where Jesus prayed and he did certain things but it's that the disciples
notice that he prayed one thing that gets asked to me often and especially as a youth pastor that would preach is how are people gonna know who you are just by looking at you right they noticed Jesus was
praying because that was something that he did often and as they were going through this idea of prayer and Jesus was going through this I also noticed that they never asked Jesus to teach them how to preach now
we know that Peter who was in this group would later three years later would stand on the steps of the southern or the eastern wall and he would preach a message and thousands would come to know Jesus but
yet he didn't ask Jesus in this moment to preach but yet he had seen Jesus preach they had seen Jesus heal people and he didn't ask how to heal people they had even watched Jesus confront Pharisees as we
looked at this morning in Sunday school confront Pharisees and really the political figures of the day and they didn't ask Jesus Jesus can you teach us how to debate among the the philosophers of the day but yet they
saw that Jesus was praying and in verse one they say this statement Lord teach us to pray I think we often forget the power of Christ's public ministry flowed from his private prayer life his public ministry of witnessing
Prayer as a First Resort
and and pouring out himself to others started long before this in prayer getting away in and reaching out to his father prayer is not a last resort for Christians prayer is the first thing we must do and it
must not be a religious routine we must be a people that have prayer as a priority in our life you can tell what matters the most to someone but what happens when they first get up in the morning
when someone gets up in the morning the first thing they do is what matters the most to them okay some of it is uh maybe going to the bathroom right because that's a good thing we got to relieve
ourselves but if you're like me very early after you finish all the things that you got to do the first thing you have to do is go and put coffee in a coffee cup right is anyone in here
agreeing with me yeah you got to get that the juices flow and you got to get coffee going it's important my wife this morning as I was leaving the Sunday school to come in here I put my coffee
mug on my desk and she said did you drink all your coffee or did you save any for me I drank it all why would I save any I got up early I made my coffee why would I
save it for somebody else that's what's important in that moment and so when we begin to ask ourselves what is the thing that occupies our mind in the morning is most likely going to occupy our mind throughout the
day and Jesus modeled for us that when trouble came he had already been in prayer and he is now living through that prayer and the disciples saw Jesus praying and they realized I don't really know how to pray
either Jesus can you teach us how to reach the father can you teach us how to live this life of prayer that you're living and I want to be a believer that is living that same way we as
the same idea must ask ourselves are we admiring prayer are we talking about prayer or do we truly value prayer that it prioritizes it to the utmost ability to everything we do Leonard Ravenhill an author that writes on
a he was an old author back in the 1800s he wrote this he said no man will be ever greater than his prayer life and this morning church I wanted to ask ourselves that this is the true statement
for us as Christians we will never be greater in our life than our prayer life our families will never be greater than how we access the throne room of God and our church this morning will never be greater
than how well we can pray and reach God it is the foundation of everything we do when we reach and we say God I want to have a church of prayer so that when things are in trouble yes
we can go to God when things are great yes we can go to God and we're going to be having access to the throne room of God and so we begin to see what Jesus walks through in this
pattern of prayer we're going to quickly walk through this passage but I want to spend the majority of my time on the the what we call the Lord's prayer the prayer that Jesus gives to his disciples and this
is a prayer that was not just a prayer that needed to be repeated mechanically oftentimes and I played football and every time before a game we would huddle up and our coach would give our pep talk and he
would get us ready to go and then he would say all right before we go we got to pray and all within unison we would all go our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name that kingdom
come that we went through this prayer and it was the mechanical of repeating this and I'm not saying that it's not a good thing this may be the only prayer that people ever hear but Jesus was saying this
in a way to model this for us not to just repeat it just repeating something over and over again you never really understand you begin to get calloused and cold to it right every night before we go to
bed every night before we go to bed I get with the children and I have a poem that I say to Jade and I have a poem that I say to Brody and there will be times just like
last night where I began saying the poem to Jade and she says another part of it and we go back and forth and I said it like three times and she didn't even realize that I had started saying
it because it can sometimes be routine and I said Jade are you even going to say the poem with me oh yeah I forgot we're going to say this again she's like dad will you please start over I
want to pay attention this time but oftentimes this is how prayer is in our life we get to the point where it is just routine and Jesus is saying I don't want you to look at the impressive words
that you can say I want you to be in this priority of saying God I want to come to you and I want to model my prayer life after the way you would pray Jesus we don't know all
Model of Prayer from Jesus
of the things that he prayed and all of his prayers were exposed to some of them but he has given us a model of how he would come to the throne room of God and how he would talk
to his father and this is how he would do this the first thing he would do is he would glorify the father he would say father your name is to be honored as holy or our father who art
in heaven hallowed be thy name is the way you probably heard it before and so father your name is holy Jesus begins his prayer not with himself but with God in mind he begins by saying my first priority
it's not my own well-being it's not the well-being of my family it's not the well-being of every other thing that's here but it is God you are the one that is the supreme reason why I
get to come to you in prayer you are the priority of all of my prayer it's not my problems it's not all the situations that I'm going through but I must begin my prayer time in praising who Jesus
is praising who God is and what he has done for us we are to approach our prayer time as a time of holiness before a holy God who desires to know what we want and we're going to get
to that but before everything else has to happen we have to praise him as a mode of worship we've been looking this morning in our youth Sunday school class of what worship looks like and how you're going to
sacrifice for worship and Charlotte was telling me we were talking about some things that you realize that were valuable later on in life and she said my grandpa Dale he was a card collector and he had a very
famous card a baseball card that was worth thousands of dollars that as a kid he took it and put it onto a paper clip and put it into his bike and used it to make a motorcycle sound and
she said and now he wishes he would have had that because it was valuable and all of a sudden it's like yes we have things that are valuable in our life and oftentimes we take things for granted because
we didn't realize they were valuable and God is telling us in our life we must not rush this presence of coming before God we must come to him in this holy sense of of requesting is there but to
come to him and say God you are holy the intimacy that God has for us here and the father that begins to talk about the reverence of who he is and all of a sudden we begin to get
into this mindset of I know who God is and I'm going to trust him in this area
oftentimes on a Sunday or even a Wednesday or whatever the kids will come to me they'll run into my office and they'll say okay what kind of candy does that have in his office or all these things that
I've got in there and all the different trinkets that I've got over the years and they come into the house or to the office of the father the pastor they understand it's my office but they understand hey I
can't mess with the computer I can't mess with other things because I don't want to break something that I won't be able to to be able to fix I want you to give this idea they respect the relationship
but they also have access to this office Jesus is saying the same thing know who God is you have access to the office but before you get there you got to know who the priority of where Jesus is
at and this access that we have to God we should never lose the all of who God is and be able to worship him in a way that is truly poured out our heart to him our prayer life
should be centered on more of God's glory than our comfort oftentimes this is backwards in our prayer life we pray for the comfort and the ease of life and God says yes I want you to have that comfort
and you may be granted that comfort but are we more consumed with God getting the glory than we are our comfort number two he says to seek the kingdom your kingdom come we must begin in our prayer time
after we understand who God is is then in turn say God give my heart the agenda of God's agenda take my agenda away take it off the table clear the table and allow my agenda to be thrown away
into the trash can and God you take the pen and you write down what you want me to do you take the idea of everything that I'm doing and you begin to work in my life to get my
agenda onto your side of the table and get what you want done prayer changes our life before the circumstances ever change when you begin to pray and say God I don't know how I'm going to get through this
week I don't know how I'm going to get through this month I don't know how I'm going to get through this school year with a seventh grade boy or a fifth grade girl or a kindergarten son that's coming
up I don't know how I'm going to get through it God just give me the patience that I need and then all of a sudden we walk away the circumstances haven't changed but God has already begun to work
in our heart we must be kingdom-minded people who are praying for God's will to be done in our lives many people treat prayer like this and I'm guilty of this as well they treat it like a customer
service this past Wednesday we had a a little bit of a fire here at the church right we uh the the microwave caught on fire something happened inside the smoke alarms went off the elevator then went to the
first floor that's why we can't use the elevator and so I called the elevator company and said hey we need some things fixed okay they'll be here on Friday to fix it between this time and this time and
so I called customer service they didn't get here I get a little frustrated because when you tell me a time it's going to happen I plan for it and I called them at 12 o'clock and said hey
you're still not here what's going on oh they're on their way they'll be there three o'clock four o'clock rolls around they're still not here I'm a little more upset now I called them and they said oh
well you got behind on the schedule if you can approve the overtime and pay the overtime we would love to send someone out there I said you've been having me wait since eight o'clock this morning what are
you doing I'm frustrated I'm treating this customer service like I've got a problem I need you to come and fix it this is your job what are you doing I begin to sit back and think
is this how I treat God am I sitting back saying God I've got a problem I'm coming to you you're the author of everything why don't you fix it now or am I coming to God saying God accomplish
your will in me I don't care how long it takes oftentimes we begin to be so burdened about our own earthly successes that we never realize the eternal impact that God is trying to work through our lives and
so he says we must glorify God first we must seek his kingdom and then he begins to say now you can gather your daily provisions give us each day our daily bread Jesus is teaching this idea of dependence
on the Lord he doesn't say I want you to notice if you want to look there in your scripture he doesn't say in verse three give us our yearly bread he doesn't say give us our monthly bread he
doesn't even say Lord give us our weekly bread he says give us today each day our daily bread he wants us as children of the Lord to continually depend on him as if everything we get comes from the
Daily Bread and Provision
Lord which it does and prayer reminds us that every good gift every perfect gift comes from God and we must gather our daily provisions daily bread which includes physical needs emotional needs spiritual needs God is wanting us to
call out him for these things one commentator said it like this each one of these phrases echoes back Israel gathering manna in the wilderness think about it manna in the wilderness that that God said I'm going to provide
you your free food every morning your crispy cream glazed donuts if you if you look at the scripture there I just sort of read in that God was the author of crispy cream glazed donuts it was honey loafed
bread that was glazed with honey on top of it I mean it explains a crispy cream donut and and God is saying here walk outside get your crispy cream donut every morning coffee's gonna be prepared for you you
get your donut and coffee and I'm providing your daily needs every morning you have to go out and get it now you cannot take more than what you need because I want you to depend on me tomorrow and
I want you to depend on me the next day and the next day and every day I want you to get up and go outside and begin to have this mind aligned with who God is and this is
what it was saying here God is showing us to be dependent on him even in our wilderness journeys that we often go through are we trusting God daily or are we trying to control everything ourselves God is telling
us in this prayer understand who he is begin to seek his kingdom and then begin to ask for those daily provisions and then he begins to say listen there's one moment in this five step of prayer there's model
of prayer where you get to ask for things now the next one is this grant us forgiveness God we've done wrong God we've sinned ourselves and we're gonna try to forgive others but but would you forgive me of the things that I've done
prayer now begins to involve this honest confession and reconciliation before the Lord you cannot walk closely with God and harbor bitterness with those that are around us as one pastor used to say that I followed you must be
right horizontally before you go vertically you must be okay with the people that are around you that you see every single day of your life before you can go to God in prayer and until we get our horizontal
relationships right God will not hear our prayers from heaven sin begins to disrupt the fellowship that we have with God and he is coming to us and he is saying you must have forgiveness in your life but are
you forgiving others that are in your life as well granting forgiveness begins to come into our life now Jesus is not teaching that every day we go to the Lord for salvation but he is telling us that every
day we go to the Lord with forgiveness of heart and saying God I want to be the best example for you that I can be the greatest example that I can give in my life is by showing others
that I will forgive them even when they have wronged me just as God you've forgiven me when I didn't deserve forgiveness either and he is telling us the best way we can show others to who Christ is is
by forgiving them and showing that forgiveness the last thing we see here in this first part is to guard us from temptation he begins to lay out in verse 4 he says and do not bring us into temptation
this first half of the year this first quarter of the year in our Sunday school class we have spent uh intimately walking through what it looks like to go through spiritual warfare what it looks like when the devil
comes against us and when spiritual warfare begins to come in and to tempt us and to want us to do wrong things and and begin to go through that temptation of Jesus in the desert and and what that
looks like and Jesus is telling us that you will go through spiritual warfare because he is showing us in this prayer that we must be dependent on him for our spiritual protection prayer recognizes that spiritual warfare is real
and it recognizes that the only weapon that we have against it is by going to God and allowing him to come into us and allowing him to give us the strength when we decide that I can handle my
own spiritual problems myself without going to God that is when destruction begins to happen in our life because we cannot handle these things that come into our life without us praying for the Lord first Peter prayed less and
when the temptation came for him to deny Jesus he denied him three times he said with boldness Lord I'm never gonna freak I'm never gonna run from you I'm never gonna deny you and he spoke boldness but he
did not have enough prayer behind that to sustain him and when the pressures of life came he folded because he his life was not surrendered in prayer now I don't know about you in my life I have a
wife that is overprotective in a lot of ways but every night before we go to bed
she makes sure that every door in the house is locked every window in the house is locked every shade is turned so that no one can see in and the house is locked up like Alcatraz does anyone else
in here have a wife like that I'm the only one okay or miss Lisa back there she's raised her hand all right so this is my wife this is my life this is where we're at 15 years I
know when we go on vacation I have to sleep closest to the door so that if someone breaks through that door they're going to attack me before they attack her like this is I've got to be the protector this is how it is
most people lock their doors before the thief arrives most people don't say oh James there's a thief in the house go lock the door because that's not going to change anything the thief's already in he's there as Jesus
said he's coming to steal kill and destroy and the door must be locked before he gets there
prayer is the tool that we have to lock the door to keep the spiritual warfare out of our family's lives too often we wait until it's already there too often the temptation has come and then we say God
guard me from this temptation I can't believe it's here and he said you never even started praying for it and all of a sudden the preparation for the temptation that was going to come must have been prayed for
beforehand are we praying proactively are we praying that the Lord would use our family and would model our family for him and would mold our family so that they would be good honor Christ honoring people in the world
so they can reach the world as they go into this world this is Jesus's model for prayer and then very quickly because I'm running way ahead of time verses five through eight the persistence of prayer Jesus shifts from
the pattern of prayer to the preservation or the persistence of the prayer that he has given he lays out this problem he said there's a man who comes and he's already in bed he's got all 25 of his
kids in bed they can't go anywhere the man knocks on the door and he says hey I need I've got a serious response I've got something that's going on I don't have bread I've got a guest and in
this day in this culture this would have been unheard of for someone not to honor the request of a neighbor it would have been like smacking them in the face in their day and Jesus is saying there was
no response there's no solution and oftentimes the prayer of our life grows out of the deepest resources and recesses of our life when we don't know what to do next and he's saying this man is in desperation he's
come out of his way he doesn't know what he's going to do and he come to the only person that he can come to and he's saying in our life when the problem comes when the desperation comes we
must go to the one that has the solution God always allows impossible so often allows impossible situations to come into our life to expose our dependence
these impossible terms that that we don't know who are we're going to turn to we don't know what we're going to do so that ultimately are we going to turn back to God and then the persistence comes in
the neighbor continues to knock he doesn't take no for an answer he understands there's a friend inside and the friend is saying get away don't bother me you're going to wake up my five-year-old I just got
him to sleep what are you doing like I can understand the frustration but the guy just would not give up Jesus is saying this is important note here he's not saying when you pray to me you're annoying me
oftentimes people will say well well when I go to God he's just going to be annoyed he's going to be like this guy that's like I've got so much going on how dare you pray for me pray to
me what he's saying is I want you to come to me because the earthly reluctance begins to turn over to this heavenly generosity to where Jesus says yes thank you for coming to me thank you for finally kneeling
down and finally coming to the one who can help us in all of our needs my father-in-law he's here with us he's from Chicago and Emily's from Illinois as well and I came across this fantastic article
this week I'm going to share it but there was a Chicago massive manufacturing printing company that was up there and and they wouldn't all the time be sending out mailers to to have people subscribe to a magazine or
to subscribe to something else and one day the computer malfunctioned it happens computers make mistakes at times and in this moment the computer malfunctioned and it sent I'm going to read it because I want to make sure I
get it right it sent to a rancher to a farmer in powder bluff Colorado 9,734 separate mailing envelopes informing him that he had a subscription to National Geographic that had expired this rancher in powder bluff Colorado did
not know what was going on and so he immediately got his cows put up he got in his car he drove to the local post office about 10 miles down the road he got there and he sent in
the renewal money for his magazine with a note that said this I give up please send me your magazines
oftentimes this is our life right we we go to God and we think that there's not there and we just think that nothing's been heard but there is something about multiple requests where someone just finally gives in you've
had a kid that has continued to ask you something and finally you're like if I give you a dollar will you please be quiet like can you please just go away Brody he just got back from Bose they
had over their year of the infill trip and he's counting all his money they had left over and he goes dad I need one penny and I'll have a complete twenty dollars or a complete dollar and change or
two dollars and change and I kid you not he has asked me for one penny no less than 25 times since Friday
dad can you give me that penny dad where's that penny at dad can I get a penny because if I get a penny I'm gonna have two dollars and change I need a penny dad can I get a
penny I'm like oh my goodness you know how many pennies I have in there just don't get a stinking penny but it's like this is what happens in our life we have this persistence that comes up and it reveals the genuine faith because we know
I don't have this penny but I know someone who does and I've got a father in heaven that wants to hear from me if only I would humble myself and go to him the Bible says like this with
shameless boldness God honors bold praying last thing here is the promise of prayer in verses 9 to 13 very quickly God closes Jesus closes with one of the greatest invitations in all of scripture the first is this the
invitation to pray Jade she uh this past two years ago this was their theme verse and she said dad you're preaching on ask seeking and knocking she said I remember learning about this two years ago at school but
this invitation to pray each one of these words asking seeking knocking begins with more and more intensity asking is showing this desire I'm asking that I need this in my life but once you've asked now you're seeking now
this is the pursuit of I've got to go after this I've got to go for this I've got to begin to grow in this area and then it says begins to transition to this knocking this persistence of I'm
not going to give up I'm going to continue to go and what it shows us is that prayer is an active source of our life it cannot be passive in our life it must be active and God has
invited us to have a communion with him that is continual that is daily that is every single moment of my life I'm coming back to the Lord each one of these verbs as it continues on it transforms in
this idea of continually asking continually seeking and continually knocking what is it in your life that you cannot stop asking God for that you continue earnestly going to God and saying God I need this in my life if
God's Good Gifts
you don't do it no one else is going to do it I've got to come to you he then goes on in verses 10 and says there's this incentive to pray for everyone who asks receives prayer then turns
into this encouragement because God gives a response God hears every single one of our prayers God hears what we have to pray and this is what happens sometimes God answers immediately sometimes God answers gradually sometimes God answers completely
different than we expected now this is hard for us to understand because we want something that we want in our way God never ignores his children sometimes it's a yes sometimes it's a no sometimes it's a maybe sometimes
it's I've got something else for you and I'm going to answer this but hear me church when we pray God does not turn a deaf ear to his children God listens to us God cares about us and sometimes
the answer is because I know what's best for you
I often say this I don't give my five-year-old my keys to my car because if I gave my five-year-old my keys to my car bad things are going to happen can everyone in here agree
with me right things are not going to be good so if he comes to me and says dad can I have the keys to your car I want to go drive
I would be a bad father if I gave him those keys I would put his life in danger and God is saying there are times you're asking for something you don't even realize the consequences if I were to answer that prayer
I've got to give you something else Hudson instead of me giving you the keys to your car how about I give you a remote control car
that's awesome dad I would like that much better right I pivoted instead of giving him what he wanted I gave him something that I knew he could understand at his level and God in the same way is saying
I'm coming to you you're coming to me and I'm going to answer that prayer in a way that maybe you didn't see fit this is this next part the response of the father where Jesus gives the picture of the father of the son
he begins to walk through verse 11 and 12 and he said what father of you
asks of his son his son asked for a fish and you give him a snake and said
God is not saying I'm here to harm you I'm here to give you something great and I have to give you things that maybe you don't understand in life
earthly fathers were flawed my sons will tell you my daughter will tell you I make mistakes all the time they point them out every Sunday when we get home they tell me every mistake that I make while I'm
up here and I tell them why don't you get up and talk for 30 minutes and see how many mistakes you make right they they see my flaws they know that I'm not perfect now my wife she's been
married to me 15 years she's never seen one mistake it's always my kids who find them and so she just thinks I'm perfect and that's what's wonderful our heavenly father is perfectly good and he looks down from heaven
and he says I have something wonderful for you I have something that you cannot even see into the future but I am preparing you right now for that future and if you'll just trust in me if you'll just
trust in what I have for you it may not be comfort that you want it may not be the success that you want in life
but what it's going to be is something that's going to be greater than you can ever imagine and it's going to be me living in and through you look at what he says here at the very end of
the very last verse in verse 13 he says the greatest gift that you can receive is not comfort it's not glory it's not name up in lights it says this if you then are evil who then ask of
good gifts how much more your heavenly father give you the holy spirit to those who ask him
Jesus is saying here I've got something so great for you I'm going to come and indwell with you
I'm going to come and as we looked at the last the first half this year I'm going to come and abide with you and in you and through you through the holy spirit to lead and guide and direct
you in all the areas of your life and it's greater than any earthly gift you could ever imagine but oftentimes
God is saying do you trust my heart do you trust that I love you do I trust do you trust that I have the perfect gift for you that you just have to be patient for or are we
so consumed with wanting our answer that we continue to move forward as Terry comes and I want to conclude with these final thoughts the disciples said Lord teach us to pray that should still be the cry of every
Simplicity of Prayer
single believer in this room today prayer is not complicated prayer is simply us coming to God costing us time costing us energy humbling ourselves and depending on him the one who is truly good and truly gifted for us
has prayer in our life become a priority or is it just something we do before we go to bed is it just something that we do before the meal or is prayer something that we have to do when
trouble comes is the prayer the thing that's the first response or is it the last resort it's prayer the last thing we do or the first thing we do the disciples as I want to reiterate never asked Jesus
to teach us to preach they never said preach to teach us to lead they even never said teach us to perform miracles
