Amen. Well, thank you, choir, for singing. If you have a child that wants to be dismissed to Children's Church, they're heading that way now. And we'll be in Psalms chapter 150 today, Psalms 150.
And excited about sort of wrapping up my portion of the Psalms. Next week, I believe Lucas is going to preach one of the Psalms as well, is what he told me. And so Psalms 150 is where we're going to be at, sort of wrap up this portion for this time.
And one of my favorite Psalms, I can remember my very last college class,
was congregational song leading. I don't know why I took it. I guess the Lord wanted me to lead the congregation of music.
But one of the things we had to memorize was Psalms 150.
And so this Psalm has always been special to me because of that. And so we're going to stand and read it today. And then we're going to jump into the message today.
It's only six verses, but there's a lot of things we want to talk about. So let's stand at a reading of God's Word today. The Bible starts out by saying, Hallelujah! Praise God in His sanctuary. Praise Him in His mighty expanse. Praise Him for His powerful acts. Praise Him for His abundant greatness.
Praise Him with the blast of a ram's horn. Praise Him with the harp and lyre. Praise Him with the tambourine and dance. Praise Him with the strings and the flutes. Praise Him with the resounding cymbals. And praise Him with the clashing cymbals. Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.
Hallelujah. Father, we thank You for this day. We thank You for the reading of Your Word. Help me as I preach Your Word this morning. Help it to help us as we truly understand what worship is and how we can worship You to our fullest ability. In Your name we pray. Amen.
You may be seated. I'm entitled to the message today, Unrestrained Worship, and how we can worship the Lord without fear of people looking at us or people judging us.
But I want you to imagine yourself reading a book today, reading a novel that's really captivating, that gets to the very last chapter.
When you get to that chapter, it just sort of all sums it all up. It brings it all together. It ties everything together nice and neat. This is the last Psalm of the Psalms, and this is what Psalms 150 does.
The Importance of Psalms
If you've read through the Psalms, I challenge you if you haven't, read through the Psalms. The Psalms talk through grief. They talk through repentance. They talk through how to go through struggles and difficulties that we've looked at. They go through fear, doubt, thanksgiving,
how to have confidence in the Lord, where our hope is at in God. David cried in the Psalms.
We looked at a couple weeks ago Asaph, and Asaph going through his life and questioning, God, are you even there? Are you around me? What's going on?
The sons of Korah write some different Psalms, and they're longing for God to be with them, and Moses even wrote some Psalms that reminds us of who God is in eternity. But when it's all said and done, the final command, the final passage, the final words of Psalms 150 say this simply,
praise the Lord. If you were paying attention as I was reading it,
13 different times in six verses, the words praise the Lord or hallelujah are used in this Psalm.
So it is something that's very, very important when it is constantly repeated and constantly going after, and it's almost impossible to read this Psalm without being like, okay, God, I think you're trying to tell me something. I think you're trying to tell me that this praise, this worship is important for me.
Charles Spurgeon, the prince of pastors, the prince of preachers, wrote about Psalms 150, and he said it is the grand duxology of the Psalter. It brings this all together in this one massive idea of what worship should be.
Another commentator, Derek Kinder said this, the Psalter ends with, not with man, but with God.
Focusing our attention completely away from our circumstances and onto a holy righteous God who is driving us to say, who is this God?
Who is this King of glory that we can worship? And I want us to sort of have this idea of thought. I shared it with our young people in Sunday school. I taught for Ms. Carrie. She's taking Addie on a birthday vacation.
And we looked at the Beatitudes this morning. And I want us to sort of challenge them. As you go through life,
the Beatitudes ends with, if you do these things, if you love your neighbors, if you are nice to those who are mean to you, you will be called the sons of the most high. And I told them this, I said, would it not be amazing for our actions and our attitudes
to be an example to others to call us children of God?
And I want to sort of challenge us this morning the same way in here. If someone were to listen to your life, if someone were to observe your life from a distance,
Living a Life of Praise
would they look at you and would they say, this person is praising more than they're complaining? This person is following the Lord in their actions.
And I can't help but notice there's something different in their life. Or would they say, yeah, their life is just like everyone else. There's difficulties and that's all they focus on.
So this is the idea that I want us to work through because we're going to look through this unrestrained worship this morning. The first is this,
verse one gives us the place of worship. Where are we to worship the Lord? How are we to worship the Lord? And we're going to look through that. But the place of worship, it says this, praise God in his sanctuary, praise him in his mighty expanse.
It begins by telling us how and where we should begin this praise and the idea of these two different locations.
And the first is this, we should worship in his sanctuary.
Now the sanctuary that we're referring to in this passage is not the sanctuary that we're sitting in today. Okay, the sanctuary that the children of Israel would have heard and begin to think about would have been the temple and the temple that was in Jerusalem.
And so it wasn't they went there every day. Most people would only go to the temple in Jerusalem one time in their entire life. Most people would not be able to afford to make this trip to Jerusalem. And it was a momentous occasion.
Now there were some that were able to make it every year. But this idea of going to the sanctuary was reserved for this holy of holy days where you were going to go
and you were going to have this wonderful experience. Some would take three or four or five months and they would travel to Jerusalem and they would go to the temple.
Today, this gathering that we meet is the people, the God, the children of the Lord that meet in this place, the sanctuary. And so he is telling us that we should gather together and we should begin to continue to meet and worship him. Hebrews says like this,
to gather and not to neglect the assembly of the people.
To come together and worship the Lord together and to hear what other people are going through in life.
Corporate worship is this wonderful thing that matters so deeply to us as believers because when we're away, the Bible says that we're a part of the body. And if you don't feed one part of your body, if you begin to be bedridden
and you don't work out your legs and you don't run eight miles like Logan's does in the morning. And again, if you ever see me running eight miles, please stop me and ask me what's wrong with me.
One, there's not going to be a conversation over the eight miles. I'm going to be dying for eight miles of trying to figure out what's going on. But as we gather together, if you neglect part of your body, that body begins to die.
And so we as a body of believers must meet together and we must join together in our voices and worship the Lord. Now someone here will may say,
well, Pastor James, I can worship God on the lake. Pastor James, I can worship God out on the golf course. And you truly can. I have been on lakes and I have been to the ocean.
I have been on mountaintops and I have been there and I have worshiped the Lord. I have looked at his glory. I've been out in the ocean and I've thought, man, God created all this and I get to sit in this ocean.
Corporate Worship vs. Personal Worship
I get to sit in this lake. I get to be on this mountain. God, you are an awesome God. And we get to worship the Lord in that way. But that does not take the place of corporate worship.
That does not take the place of coming to the sanctuary and worshiping the Lord together. The Bible never allows private worship to replace a public gathering of believers. believers.
And so the Bible is telling us that we should come together and we should complement the corporate worship by what has been done in the private.
And as we privately worship the Lord on our day-to-day basis, as we're out on the farm or we're at work or wherever it may be, as we worship the Lord in those locations, we then come into his house and it overflows of worship as we have experienced all week long.
And we get to say, God, I don't want to substitute this, but I want to complement this as beginning to worship you in your house.
He again goes on to the next part. He says, praise him in his mighty expanse. I put it like this, worship in his splendid skies. This mighty expanse points beyond the earth and into his heavens.
Everywhere God has ruled and he has placed his glory upon everything and every place is worthy of praise. There is no glory that is isolated to a specific zip code.
Whether you're on a mission trip, whether you're here in Clingman, whether you're on halfway across the world on a business trip, you get to worship the Lord and God is worthy of our worship.
I mean, when you stand beside, as I just mentioned, you stand beside an ocean or you stand beside of a mountain or you go and you experience God's creation, you truly begin to see who this God is that created these things. Creation has a way of making us feel super small.
I mean, you can be like six foot seven like Logan and be a giant and stand beside of a mountain and you're like, I am nothing compared to this mountain that's beside me that God has created.
And creation should be a way of preaching God's goodness to the whole world and it should allow us to look at what he has created and say, God, you created this for me to enjoy, to see.
One of the beautiful things that we have is we have a five-year-old who's rambunctious and if you've ever been around five-year-olds, you know they can be crazy, but we'll be at the house or we'll
be riding around and just two nights ago, we came in and the storm had happened and the rain was going and the storm clouds had disappeared and the sun was going down and Hudson took Hagrid outside, our little
dog that the kids love that I don't wish we had, but took the dog outside and he came back in and he goes, Dad, Mom, God put cotton candy skies outside.
He is seeing that God is the creator of all these things and he made the sky in a way that brought him joy.
And he saw the sky and he was able to worship the Lord in that moment in a childlike faith and saying, you know what, I understand that this just didn't happen, but God created this for me. Psalms 19 tells us this, the heavens declare declare the glory of God.
When we look at the heavens, when we look at the universe, we should be able to see the glory of God in these things. Terry got me watching a show on Apple TV
that is about the moon landing and I've been watching it and it has brought back these memories that I have learned years ago that Neil Armstrong,
while he was going to the moon, if you believe that we went to the moon,
I don't know where you're at this morning in here, but if you believe we went to the moon, that he was able to sit there on the moon and took communion on the moon.
He understood that the God of the universe was the God of the moon and was the God of all creation and all of heavens and earth and he was able to worship the Lord there in the moon.
We, as the same way, get to worship the Lord inside of these four walls, but also, these four walls should be a launching pad for us.
We should be coming in, as one old preacher used to say, as a filling station to fill us up, to fill our gas tank up, to launch us out into the week, to be able to go out and
Worship Beyond the Sanctuary
to worship the Lord everywhere we go. This should not be the finish line.
Church, this should be the gathering place where we come in, we get refilled and we go out from here and we say, world, I gotta tell you something. I gotta tell you what God has done in this wonderful creation that he has created for me.
He gives us a place of worship, but then he gives us the purpose of worship in verse two. Verse two, who lays it out and it says, praise him for his powerful acts and praise him for his abundant greatness. Praising him in these two ways can lay it out like this.
Praise him for what he has done. The purpose of worship is to praise the Lord for what he has done. He lays out his mighty acts.
I wrote down a couple of things. Creation, the exodus of Jews as they left from their bondage, the cross and the salvation that he has given us, the resurrection from the dead as Christ was buried and crucified and rose again the third day.
Our salvation, the answered prayers that we have, the act of grace that he has given us and the undeserving mercy that God has given us every single day of our life. We get to stand and we get to praise him for what he has done in our lives.
Children often, and I'm one of these as a child, now as I'm an adult, but as a child, I often forgot or ignored what my mom and dad did to provide a good, loving household for me. And it wasn't until I became a parent myself, I began to realize how much they sacrificed.
I began to realize how much that they were oftentimes giving of themselves to provide this wonderful home that I had.
And it wasn't perfect. Again, my mom and dad, they split up and they had a divorce and I understand it wasn't perfect, but I understood that my mom and dad did a lot behind the scenes to provide for me and my four
brothers and sisters. Oftentimes, we as Christians have spiritual amnesia. We forget what the Lord did for us. We forget the prayers that were answered.
We forget the good things that God has done for us. And we just look to God and say, God, do you even care about me? God, do you not see me going through these problems right now? Are you not even there?
And we forget the hundreds of thousands of prayer requests and good things that God has given us over the years and we quickly forget what God has done.
I think this is so important because as you look through the children of Israel, everywhere they went, God commanded them to set up a memorial or a statue or a monument to remind them of the things that they went through.
When they came across the Red Sea and God delivered them from Pharaoh, he told each of the 12 tribes to go and to grab a stone and to put up a massive stone monument.
And he says that one day your kids are going to walk past this stone and your kids are going to ask you, Dad, what mean these stones? Why are these stones here?
And you get to say, well, one day we were being chased by Pharaoh and God was delivering us and he split the Red Sea and we got to come through on dry ground and so we put these stones
up to be a memorial or a monument or a memory of what was going on there. He's telling us, don't forget what God has done for us. God is constantly telling us to remember the things that he has done.
Not only do we praise him for what he has done, but we praise him for who he is. Look at what it says here. Praise him for his abundant greatness, his excellent greatness, one version says.
This moves beyond the good gifts that God has given us, but it brings us into the realization of who God is and the character of who he is. He says, as you go through your life, don't forget the character. Don't forget the prayer that God answered.
He would, don't forget that God is continuing to work things out for your good, for his glory.
And we must be a people who don't just praise him for the good things, but praise him for even the things that maybe don't get answered, that we wish would answered.
The prayer requests that we wish that God would come in and work in our family's life or work in our job opportunities or whatever it may be, even when those prayers don't get answered, we still praise the Lord for who he is.
You see, worship and the children of Israel knew this as they went through the Psalms.
Worship was not dependent upon their circumstances. As David was being chased by Saul,
the majority of the Psalms were written as he was being chased by his dad's, by his best friend's dad,
who God had promised that he would be the next king, who God had anointed him to be the next king, and yet the king is coming after him and he's writing these Psalms where he's saying, praise the Lord. Praise him for his goodness.
Praise him for his greatness. Praise him for the good things that he has done for us because his praise was built upon the character of who God is in his life. John Calvin wrote it like this, true worship begins when God's excellence outweighs our focus of self.
We must be people who are focusing on God's excellence, not what we are or who we are or what we have done.
God's Worth vs. His Works
The psalmist begins to move us from God's works to God's worth.
Is your worship this morning based on the blessings of God or is it based on God's character?
We see the place of worship and we see the purpose of worship, but then as we continue on verses three through six, the biggest portion of scripture that we're going to look at today here is the passion of worship.
Look at the, if you are like me and you notice things that can sometimes be odd or a little different, look at the explosion of instruments in this passage. It says, beginning in verse three, praise him for his ram's horn, praise him for his harps and lyres, his tambourines, his strings,
his flutes, his cymbals, his loud cymbals. I mean, he's going through and he is laying out all of these different things and these different instruments.
To the best of my ability, to the best of my study, this is the largest collection of instruments that's ever been recorded in one passage of scripture in all of scripture.
Many times throughout scripture, we have instruments that are listed, but this specific part is laying out all these different instruments that he is saying, listen, when you come in to the house of worship,
when you come into the place of worship and you begin worshiping God, the passion that should be coming behind this is total engagement.
He's not saying you have to have all these 45 different instruments in order to worship the Lord. He's saying, when you come into the house of the Lord, you'd be so engaged in worship.
You'd be so enamored in who he is that the only thing you can do is praise the Lord. And he begins to lay these out by saying, these are the different instruments that we should be having that are great to have.
And he gives us this expression that we should be showing one another's. The first thing he gives is to worship the Lord wholeheartedly. Every instrument is representative like this of a different person in here.
He says, listen, as you begin to worship, look at how each one of these instruments are different. Some are loud. Some are soft.
Some are rhythm and this, rhythm and that. I can't even say the word I wrote down. Rhythm and that. They have rhythm to them. Some are melodic.
Right? That's what I wrote down. And so God deserves our entire heart to worship him.
Oftentimes, we come into the house of the Lord and we say, God, I'm hurting today and i'm only going to give you part of my heart because the other half of my heart is broken And I can't even worship you with that side. So i'm just going to half-heartedly worship you
And god says no, no, no Come into the house of the lord and bring this passion of worship that is all of your heart That is all of your soul that is all of your mind and worship him with all of your ability this morning Imagine this morning My sister just had
My my oldest nephew uh from my sister Just graduated high school
And I text her and I said, you know in like five years we're going to have a high school graduate Allison doesn't like to think of that. She's doing children's church. Uh, she would be crying right now if I said that She's my baby That's just what happens.
And so I text her and I said can you believe That you just had a senior graduate high school This is what she said to me. She said james
This is the craziest feeling ever She said it feels like just yesterday I graduated high school And now i'm watching my baby boy walk across the stage And I said I bet you didn't cry one bit.
She said james I don't think i've ever cried as hard in my entire life She said I stood up and i'm crying and i'm excited and i'm cheering and we had cowbells And we're banging the cowbells and my
brother my she said my my brother was there and he had an air horn He's blowing the air horn He said it was like the entire stadium was going crazy for when my nephew walked across the stage And I thought you know How often is
Someone walk across the stage after they do that and someone gets up and goes Good job a little golf clap. Don't be too loud
I'm, just gonna let everyone around me know that I just i'm excited about what's going on right now
And oftentimes we we come into the house of the lord and i'm not saying we should come in and be obnoxious and crazy But people should come in they should know that we love the lord by the excitement
that we have in coming into his house We're going to be excited for other things.
We're going to stand and we're going to cheer We're going to clap and we're going to celebrate is what jesus did for us worth celebrating Is what jesus did for us on the cross worth us getting a little bit crazy and excited over?
I would say yes I would say that it's the greatest thing that's ever happened to me and I can't help but get excited When I talk about jesus who has come and saved me and delivered me from my
sin and I can't help but have my entire heart worship him As we go throughout our life Secondly, we see here we worship him joyfully Look at here. There's no embarrassment.
There's no reluctance There's no concern about appearance of people looking at them and saying what are you doing?
Why are you saying these things he's saying worship him with dance and with tambourine and praise him with resounding symbol clashing symbols begin to worship him without any reluctance without anyone being afraid to Be judged by how we're
worshiping the lord Real worship forgets self because it becomes consumed with who god is Biblical worship this morning church is passionate, but it's also grounded It's passionate on who god is and it's grounded in the truth of scripture truth Begins to fuel our emotion
When you hear a truth or a good fact you should be like man, that's that's encouraging for me And I should be emotional about that and emotion as we go through life begins to express that way through truth
And so we need to worship lord joyfully We need to worship lord wholeheartedly and i've got to hurry. We've got to worship the lord continually
Praise as a Lifestyle
Verse after verse after verse he continues to repeat the phrase praise him praise him Praise should become a lifestyle
Right lifestyle of of living the way people go throughout their life and they do things Because this is a lifestyle that not as just merely a sunday activity But it should be a lifestyle as we go throughout our
life as we are interacting with our co-workers If we're interacting with our schoolmates as we're interacting with our family members on family gatherings We should be showing others that we are praising him because of who he is and what he has done for us Most commentators observe this that repetition
Intentionally overwhelms the reader the psalm doesn't merely describe praise But he is producing praise as he is walking through this passage and he's saying look this is what praise does Praise praise begins to shout with a loud horn
praise begins to dance Uncontrollably because you're just showing the world who god is and what he has done for you
I want to ask us this question and I wanted to be in a way where it's like you just be be crazy for no reason I believe that we should be grounded in who god is but when's the
last time That you raised your hand in worship when's the last time you Did something? That maybe cost you your pride as you worship the lord I can remember a couple of years ago.
I've shared this picture before It may have been one of my very first sermons jade was Five or six years old and we went to a conference in arkansas
And we were sitting there and we were praising the lord and she was little and she goes hey dad Can I get on your shoulders?
Now she's not gonna get on my shoulders now because she'll hurt me Uh, she hurt my neck the other day.
We were messing around Uh, but but I put her up on my shoulders and we were singing a worship song and I just remember I was raising my hand And we were worshiping the lord and someone one of
the teenagers beside me clicked the picture because in that moment jade Had raised both of her hands She didn't care about the world around her.
She didn't care about the the friends that were around her that were going to judge her She was a five-year-old who was just worshiping the lord And she didn't care if someone said something wrong because she was just gonna praise jesus for who he was
When's the last time we were like a five-year-old who just didn't care about what other people said about us Who just said god i'm gonna worship you for who you are because you
Deserve all the praise and all the worship that you have given me And I don't care if someone says something that that maybe is going to make fun of me in that way
So we see the place of worship We see the purpose of worship the passion of worship And then it ends with the very last thing the people of worship In verse six the very last phrase here. He says let everything
That has a breath Praise the lord And he ends with this word. Hallelujah You see this invitation is is not just to the pastors It's not just to the deacons.
It's not just to the the leaders of the church. It's not just to the musicians It's not just to the missionaries.
It's not just to the evangelists that go out It is to every single person that has breath to praise the lord it reaches everyone And if you're sitting here today and you are still breathing
Then the lord is telling us through this song that you should be praising the lord I wrote down just a couple of things here and i'll be quick. The first one is this every breath is a gift
Every breath that we have in our body is a gift if you've ever talked to anyone who has Been through a struggling moment.
Maybe a patient that's on oxygen Maybe someone who's struggled from a pneumonia with miss gail who was just in the hospital this past week They when I went in to see her last sunday She was on a c
-pat a b-pat machine because she couldn't breathe on her own and they were forcing oxygen in She didn't even know I was there and the next day or the two days later when I went and saw her
I was talking to her and I said it's great to see you without that that machine and that mask and everything on you And she said i'm just thankful that I can breathe Without that machine it was sitting
right there beside her a reminder of where she was at and she said I have breath in my own lungs I can begin to breathe and and all of a sudden we begin to take these things For granted
we take our our heartbeat we take every sunrise that we see every meal that we go through the mercy that god has given us Everything that we have been given has been borrowed by god than given to us
And when is the last time we began to sit down and truly say god You gave me this breath you gave me this life to live and I can't help but turn and praise you for what you've done for me Number two every believer has a responsibility
I'm going to tell you in here I'm going to be the very first one to agree with this first statement i'm going to say
Not everyone in here sings well Your pastor included I am not a good singer. I know that And I know that I don't praise the lord with eloquent voice There are thousands and millions of people that can sing a hundred million times better than me But yet I understand
That everyone can praise the lord well You don't have to sing well You don't have to have the right note at the right time at the right beat at the right moment in order to praise the lord He
is just simply telling us that we are not dependent on our talent We are dependent upon the gratitude that god has given us to stand up and say god I want to use the breath that you have given me to praise the lord
And every life this morning number three every life should become worship
Praise isn't just singing oftentimes we think of praise as singing praise is actions Praise is a as romans 12 tells us this praise is a living sacrifice Holy and acceptable for god where we lay down our life and
we begin to say god Let my work and what I am doing this week be worship Let my parenting as I parent my children be worship Allow my my my fatherhood and my my husband to be a a
form of worship to you to lead my family Well, allow me as a mom to be a a leader in my home to To point my children toward christ Allow me and my generosity that I give back to the lord to be a form of worship
Allow me in my obedience to the lord to be worship Worship church this morning extends So far beyond just music
We we talk about music and we talk about worship and when we say worship We often just think about coming and singing or a mic or a song book but But truly when you understand what worship is You
begin to understand that when the voices stop When the musicians stop and you're just sitting there alone with the lord and you're just meditating on him And you're worshiping who he is
That should be our life of worship I want to ask us sort of this question as terry comes Does your monday match your sunday? Does your tuesday match your sunday?
When you come into the house of the lord and you worship him and you Interact with one another are we doing the same thing on monday and thursday throughout the week where we say god?
I just want to worship you today I want my my monday to be like a sunday I want to wake up in the morning and and physically get ready to walk out my doors to go and worship you
Wherever I go whatever Moment that I go into I want it to be a time where I worship who you are And what you are doing
Psalms 150 doesn't end with a benediction A benediction is the final closing prayer where we pray and we just sort of go out It ends with an invitation
Invitation to Praise
It ends with an invitation that says let everything that has breath praise the lord And he is inviting us to step in and say are you going to praise the lord today?
One of the most amazing things that I like to do this is maybe just my weird james saffert thinking I like to always compare like how the book begins To how book ends Right if if you're a harlem
cobain guy we've been reading and watching a lot of harlem cobain lately The way he begins his story is like weird mystery and then at the end and he just sort of wraps it all up in a in a really fun way
The book of psalms begins with psalms chapter one and it begins to show us two ways of living
He says there's going to be one person who lives this way and their life ends in destruction There's going to be another one that lives with a tree that's planted by water They surround themselves with god and the
end of their life ends with this glorious way of who god Has for them And I believe that the end of psalms 150 the end of the book of psalms
Ends with what happens when you live a life that is planted by the tree of life You can't help but wake up in the morning and say Praise the lord for his goodness
Praise the lord for his mighty expanse praise the lord for his powerful acts praise the lord for his abundant greatness And I just can't help but praise the lord for the breath that I have This morning if you've experienced forgiveness You should be praising the lord If you've experienced Walking through suffering
You should be praising the lord if you've experienced prayers that have been answered in your life You should be standing on the top of a mountain praising the lord for what he's done for us
If you've been sitting there waiting for god to answer a prayer And say god, I don't know how much longer I can wait God, I don't know how much time i've got left. I've been praying for these prayer requests.
