Heb 2:5-9

  1. Thank you for listening to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Sermon Audio. For more information, please visit our website, pgbcronda.com, or visit on all social media platforms. I hope that blessed your heart as well. That was an incredible song.

And I hope that's your testimony tonight. Give me Jesus, all of Jesus, more of Jesus, less of me, and all of him that I can get. And that's what it's all about. Let's take our Bibles tonight to Hebrews chapter 2. Hebrews chapter 2, and I hope that you did your homework.

Anybody brave enough to say they did their homework? Anybody? I got a few. Oh, man, I got some star peoples here tonight. Very good.

Very good. Well, we are looking together three times this week into the book of Hebrews chapter 2. And so if you read Hebrews chapter 2 last night, I encourage you to read it tonight as well.

  2. And then after the evening sermon tomorrow evening, I'd encourage you to read it then also. And I know it'll be a blessing to you. Isn't it good to be in church on a Tuesday night?

I was driving over here from Salisbury where I grew up and spent the night last night in my parents' house where I grew up and, you know, just driving back from there to here and passing familiar landmarks along the way. I thought about a lot of turns I almost took.

And I thought about a lot of ways that I almost went. And I realized, you know,

there were a lot of acts of divine intervention and grace in my life that resulted in me being in church on a Tuesday night.

And if you can't look back over the landscape of your life and see how God intervened and God worked and how you could be somewhere much worse tonight than this and be thankful for those divine interventions,

  3. listen, you're in a dark place spiritually. And I hope you would just pause maybe on a Tuesday night like this and say, thank you, Lord, for bringing me to church on a Tuesday night. That being said, you got your Bibles open to Hebrews chapter 2.

I want you to look with me where we left off last night in verse number 5. Hebrews chapter 2 and verse 5.

Again, we're talking here about Jesus and the Bible says, For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come whereof we speak. But one in a certain place testified, saying, and this is a quotation from Psalm chapter 8,

What is man that thou art mindful of him, or the son of man that thou visitest him? Talking about humankind, he says, Thou madest him a little lower than the angels, and crownest him with glory and honor, and it set him over the works of thy hands.

  4. Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet, for in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him, but now we see not yet all things put under him. I love the first phrase of verse 9, But we do see Jesus,

who is made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor, that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

There is a repeated refrain in these verses that I've read to you, one in verse 7, and once in verse number 9. And this is a quotation, a direct quotation from the 8th Psalm, and it's the phrase, crowned with glory and honor.

And if God will help me for a few moments this evening, just give me utterance, I want to bring a message from this chapter entitled,

  5. crowned with glory and honor. I'm going to ask you to do me a favor, it's going to be a little bit more Bible study than it is going to be typical preaching, and so you have to listen with intentionality, but I do know

this, you'll see Jesus in this passage of scripture in a wonderful way, and I know it will make a great difference in your life.

So can we pray and ask God to help us as we jump into his word.

Father, we have been challenged already to see Jesus, and I believe that you took the songs that have been sung tonight,

and the message that, Lord, you've put on my heart, and Lord, you've just congruently put them together as only the Holy Spirit can do. And I know, God, that when you work this way, you're doing it for a very specific reason.

  6. Lord, you know the hearts of the people that sit in this room tonight.

Lord, you number the hairs on their head, you know they're down sitting, they're uprising, you understand their thoughts are far off, you know what they stand in need of, and I don't. And so, Lord, I pray that you'd help me.

I pray, Lord, that you would make me as your preacher this evening, one that, Lord, hides behind the cross, and what we have not give us, what we know not teach us,

and by your word and through your spirit, what we are not make us to be, in Jesus' name, amen. Amen.

When I was growing up, there was one word that I always hated to hear my parents say, and it was the word potential. Because they never used the word potential, that word never came up in like a complimentary manner.

  7. It was usually more in what they thought was a constructive manner.

But you know what it was like, I mean, you can imagine the scenario, you come home from school, you've got that report card in that sealed envelope,

and mom and dad sit down, and they look at that report card, and they begin to notice that you didn't do as well academically as they believed you should be able to do. And so they would have a conversation with me, and they would say, now, Stephen,

we're looking at these grades on this report card, and we just don't feel like you are performing at the level of your potential.

We don't feel like you're achieving all that you are capable of achieving. You are just falling below the baseline of your abilities.

Now, you don't have to raise your hand tonight, but how many of you can think back to a similar conversation, perhaps, that you had with a parent as a child?

  8. And you know, we don't have these conversations with parents only. You know, sometimes we'll have a conversation like this with an employer. Hey, it's performance review time, and they bring you in, and they evaluate your work,

and they say, hey, you know, you're not quite operating at the level we think someone with your years of experience should be able to operate. We all, I think, to some degree or another, are familiar with the concept and the feeling that we are not reaching our potential.

And in this passage of Scripture, the author of Hebrews,

under inspiration of the Spirit of God, points out the potential that God created mankind to possess, the potential that God created mankind to operate at. And then he says this, we don't operate at our divinely designed potential. God created us.

This is what Psalm 8 is about. God created us in the initial Genesis account of creation as the crowning glory of his creation.

  9. He took Adam and Eve, and he placed them in that perfect garden, and there he crowned them with glory and honor, and as an aspect of crowning them with glory and honor, and an outgrowth of crowning them with

glory and honor, he put all things, all of creation, all of the earth, in subjection under them.

And then the writer of Hebrews says, but look around. Does it look like we're having dominion that God said we should have over the earth, or does it look like the earth is having dominion over us? Look around.

Does it seem like we have control over our circumstances, or does it seem like our circumstances have control over us? And he says, basically, in this explanation of Psalm 8,

that we, though in our initial creation, we're crowned with glory and honor, we're not living up to our potential. But his point in this text is not to point out where we failed.

  10. His purpose in this text is to point out the fact that Jesus has succeeded where we have failed. We have fallen short.

But in every way that we have fallen short, Jesus has achieved, and Jesus has conquered. We did not reach our potential, but thankfully, Jesus did.

And as we walk through this passage of Scripture tonight, I want you to walk through it with me under three headings. And the first one, I want you to look with me, beginning in verse number five, at mankind's unique destiny. Mankind's unique destiny.

In verse number five, he talks about the angels. And this has been a common theme in Hebrews 2 already. We talked about just in our study yesterday that the Old Covenant, the Old Testament law, came to the people of Israel by the mouth of angels.

In the first part of verse five, he says that in the original creation,

  11. the angels were never given a position of rule or authority over the world. The world wasn't put in subjection to angels. They weren't given dominion and told to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth. Verse number six, but in a certain place.

In Psalm number eight, we are told that God says concerning man, what is man that thou art mindful of him, the son of man that thou art visitest? And what do you see in human beings that you have invested in them such potential and such unique glory as it relates to creation?

In a sense, verse number seven, man is existing a little bit lower than the angels. The angels as supernatural beings are not bound by time and space like humans are.

And yet, even though angels are not bound by time and space like human beings are, human beings have been crowned with special glory and honor.

  12. We've been given a wonderful authority. The Bible tells us in Genesis chapter one what this dominion was supposed to look like.

It says there that God designed mankind to have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creature that crawls upon the earth. Did you catch that? That's the entirety of what inhabits this planet.

We are supposed to have dominion and authority over fish in the sea, fowls in the air,

cattle on the land and over all the creatures of the earth and over the earth itself.

And then quoting Psalm 8 in the context of Genesis 1 here, the writer of Hebrews denotes the fact that God has crowned mankind like you and me with this glory and honor, that we were made for this incredible purpose.

  13. And yet there's something inside all of us that realizes that we're not living up to that potential, that we were made for more and we can never quite reach that plane or plateau.

A number of years ago when I first started pastoring, I was sitting in my office one day and the phone rang and I began a conversation on the phone

with a guy who I didn't know, but it was one of those conversations that you just really couldn't forget. When I answered the phone, he said, are you the pastor at the Faith Baptist Church?

And I said, yes, sir, I am. And he said, I really need to talk to you. And I said, well, please come by my office. And he said, how soon can I come? And I said, well, I'm here right now. He said, I'll be right there.

He got in his pickup truck and drove from his house to my office.

  14. And I didn't even know who was coming. I mean, he told me his name, but I couldn't place him. And he pulls up to the church and he comes into my office. After a few words of conversation, I finally figured out who this guy was. We had run a, just a few months prior, a children's ministry.

And we had run a little bus through various neighborhoods in our community.

And we had picked up this guy's two daughters and brought them to our Bible school. And so this, our church was the only church he had any kind of connection with.

And he came into my office and he basically confessed to the fact that he had been contemplating, you know, taking his own life. He was in a place of darkness and depression and despair.

And he just opened up to me. And I mean, he just started spilling his guts, so to speak.

  15. And he talked about the fact he was a union electrician. He had made a good living as a union electrician. He lived in a nice house. The American dream in many ways.

He had a wonderful wife and he had two precious children. He had all of the things that would appear to denote happiness.

He had all of the things that would appear to guarantee a man a measure of satisfaction and success.

And yet, there were some problems in his marriage and there were some problems in his home and some addiction in his family. And they were eating away at these dreams that he had and these aspirations that he had been reaching for.

And I'll never forget, he looked me in the eyes. I'd never had a conversation with this man before in my life. And he looks me in the eyes and he says, Stephen,

  16. he says, I just feel like I was made for more than this. To go to work and earn money and struggle and pay bills and keep the lights on and feel so empty and feel so unfulfilled inside.

You know what that man expressed in my office that night is something that all of us have grappled with at one time or another. Every single one of you at some point or some juncture in your life has thought, is this all there is to it?

I mean, am I just supposed to go through this routine, wash, rinse, repeat every day?

Is it supposed to be this hard? Is the struggle supposed to be this real? Does it get any easier? Is there any gratification or satisfaction or fulfillment out there? Will we ever plateau?

Where does that feeling come from and why is it so universal? It's because we are not living up to our God-given potential.

  17. God created us in the original creation as human beings to be crowned with glory and honor, to have dominion and a dominion that's so impressive that it is a dominion over the fish of the sea, fowls of the air, over the earth in all of its entirety. No matter how hard we try,

we can't seem to grasp and we can't seem to grip that glory and honor. Why is that?

It's because in this text of Scripture we see not only mankind's unique destiny, but we also see mankind's unfortunate downgrade.

In the latter part of verse number 8, we've already touched on this, but it says this, after saying that God created mankind to be crowned with glory and honor, the Bible says, but now we see not yet all things put under His feet.

If we were created to have dominion over all things, why don't we?

  18. Why don't we have that control? And what is in this particular passage of Scripture and what it is communicating to us is that our human potential has gone unachieved because of what is commonly referred to as the fall of man,

the sin of Adam and Eve in the garden that has plunged the entirety of our race into depravity.

And what the writer of Hebrews points out here, he's not belittling us, he's not belittling human beings, he's just pointing out the truth, the fact.

And the truth, the fact is, is that we, because of sin, have been demoted and made to exist as mere shells of what God in the original creation intended us to exist as.

What we were designed to dominate, think about this with me for just a moment, what we were designed to dominate now dominates us.

You don't have to turn there, but in your Bibles, you might write down these cross-references.

  19. Romans 5 and verse 17 tells us that by one man's offense, that is the offense, the sin of Adam, the Bible says there, death has dominion rather than us.

In Romans 5, verse 21, it tells us further that sin has reigned unto death. And in Romans 8, verses 19 to 21, the Bible tells us that all of creation,

including humanity, is subjected to futility, to vanity, and that all of creation is groaning under what the Bible calls the bondage of decay or corruption.

Do I have to convince you tonight that all of creation, including your own body, is decaying and declining?

I don't have to convince any of us of that. Every person in this room has gone to the doctor and had the doctor scratch their head and say, you know, there's a few parts that you have that are worn out that need some replacing and there is some

  20. repair work to be done. And we are fighting off the inevitable decline and decay.

You take a vehicle, I talked about last night, the price of neglect. You take a vehicle in perfect running order and you just park that vehicle and you leave it there for a period of time, what's going to happen? It's going to begin to decay. It's going to begin to deteriorate.

You take a house and you just vacate that house. You walk away from that building. You stop using it.

And over a period of time, that house is going to decay and it's going to deteriorate. Why?

It's because all of creation, because of sin, has been subjected to futility and to corruption and to decay. Things aren't getting better and better, but things left to themselves,

including the entirety of creation, are in fact getting worse and worse. And the result is this.

  21. Instead of having dominion over creation, we're squirming and we're helpless,

chained by the chaos of this present hour, and all of the time fighting off inevitable destruction.

I mean, think about it for just a moment. You guys live in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and memories of the hurricane here just a couple of years ago are still very fresh in your minds. You think about an event like that. Think about how cataclysmic

it was. Think about how sudden and unanticipated it was, how all of a sudden, in a moment of time,

something that you had no control over, something that you could not anticipate, something that you could not possibly stop, comes through and without any warning takes away your power and takes away your cell coverage and removes your ability to travel from one place to another.

And you look at an event like that and you say, wait a minute, we're supposed to have dominion over creation,

  22. but we don't have any control over that. It has control over us.

I spent a couple of years living out in what I call the People's Republic of California. I lived out in California for four years.

You know in California they don't have the hurricanes but they have the wildfires out there.

And I remember sitting there in Lancaster, California and looking out over the balcony of the apartment where I lived and watching ash just fall from the skies and people just walked around as if it was nothing.

But you recall here just a couple of years ago about the same time there was that hurricane here. There was those tragic wildfires out there in places like Pacific Palisades and so forth. Lush, beautiful, wealthy neighborhoods.

And this fire just comes through and takes this beautiful neighborhood, multi-million dollar homes inhabited by some of those wealthy and powerful people in our country and turns all of it into just an ash heap in a moment

  23. and nobody could stop it. Nobody had control over it.

And you look at an event like that and you say, aren't we created to have dominion over the earth to subdue it, to fill it?

Aren't we the ones supposed to be in control of creation and all of a sudden it appears as we look around that we actually have no control at all that in fact it has control over us?

And what every human being fears more than just natural disasters like that is the ultimate thing over which we have no control and that is death.

Isn't it true this evening that for the vast majority of people death takes them by surprise?

I preached a funeral on Saturday and I preached a lot of funerals and I was thinking the lady who passed away was an older lady and she was advanced in years and I know age is relative so don't

  24. think for a minute I'm going to tell you how old she was okay?

But she was an older lady and she was advanced in years and she passed away and I was standing there at the funeral home and I was talking to her son and he was talking to me and he

just said to me I just thought I had more time with mom I didn't know it was going to happen so quickly I mean one day she was doing well and the next day she was gone

I went to another man's home last week who had just passed away and I went in there and was talking to the family

he was laying there in the hospice bed deceased and his daughter said to me she said you know just last week he was out riding his lawnmower across the yard and picking up pine cones and look at him

  25. now he's gone I just can't believe how fast it happened that man was 92 years old I'll tell you his age at 92 years old it still came as a surprise

I think for all of us we understand and we accept the reality of the fact that we have no control over even something like death and it strikes fear in our hearts death is a constant reminder of the

fact that something has gone terribly wrong God created us to have dominion he created us with this wonderful potential and we're not living up to it what we were supposed to control is controlling us but I'm so glad

tonight that's not where the writer of Hebrews leaves us because if that's where he left us we would be in very bad shape but we see in this passage of scripture tonight not only mankind's unique destiny and not

  26. only mankind's unfortunate downgrade but thirdly and finally we see mankind's undeserved dominator now remember the scene that the writer of Hebrews has set up he said that in the original creation God created us with glory and honor a

crown of glory and honor he created us to have dominion over the fish of the sea the fowl of the air he created us to have dominion over the earth to multiply and subdue it and fill the earth

and then he points out the fact that if we look around we don't see all of creation under mankind's feet we don't see that dominion that God designed us to possess

but in verse number 9 he says one little phrase that completely flips everything on its head he says we don't see mankind in control verse number 9 but what we do see is Jesus who was made a little

  27. lower than the angels for the suffering of death and we see him crowned with glory and honor and let me just let me just pause for a moment and just pull you in and help you sink your spiritual

teeth into what is being said here the Bible says here that mankind Psalm 8 was made a little lower than the angels that angels are supernatural beings we are natural beings and so when God made us he made

us not supernatural beings but he made us natural beings and the Bible says here that we see Jesus who for a little time was made a little lower than the angels when did that take place that took place

2000 years ago in Bethlehem's manger when the God of glory God's own son and our savior Jesus Christ one with the father the one who as I mentioned last night not only created all things but also by the

  28. word of his power upholds all things that same Jesus entered time and space and the Bible says that same Jesus in Philippians chapter 2 took upon himself the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of

man and being found in fashion as a man he humbled himself and became obedient unto death even the death of the cross Jesus came into this world in the form of a servant he was robed in human flesh he was made a little lower than the angels

for the suffering of death and he is crowned with glory and honor and what the writer of Hebrews is alluding to here is this fact he's alluding to the fact that Jesus has lived up to the potential that

none of us ever could and that Jesus has achieved all that we were supposed to achieve but because of sin are not able to achieve how is that I want you to think about it for just a moment

  29. do you remember how I just said a moment ago that man was supposed to have dominion over the fish of the sea

now I would like to think I had dominion over the fish but there's been many times what the disciples say to Jesus is something I could have said Lord I fished all night and caught no fishes there's been

many times in my life I've gone out with a fishing pole and I've gone out with tackle and I got completely

scummed but you know Jesus during his earthly ministry illustrated on more than one occasion that he had dominion over the fish of the sea do you remember that you remember the disciples of our Lord seasoned fishermen have fished

all night and they caught no fishes and they're on the banks of the Sea of Galilee and Jesus approaches their boat and he says hey y'all caught anything

  30. and they say no we've fished all night and we've caught no fishes and he says cast your net on the right side of the boat and they humor him

likely thinking that there's no way that they're going to catch any fish and the Bible says they catch their net over the right side of the boat and they catch so many fish to the net breaks

that's not the only time Jesus does something to prove he has dominion over the fish of the sea you'll recall that on one occasion the disciples had a tax bill to pay well wouldn't you like for Jesus to do this for you

they had a tax bill to pay and Jesus says I'll tell you what go down to the seashore and cast a line in the water and catch a fish and in that fish there'll be a Roman coin that's exactly what you need for the tax bill and lo and behold that's exactly

  31. what happens why why does Jesus do that why didn't Jesus just pull a coin out of the air why does he make them do that I think in many ways Jesus is showing himself to be the fulfillment of

all that mankind Jesus in his humanity and deity is the fulfillment of all that mankind were supposed to be he has dominion over the fish of the sea how many of you understand that the Bible

says that and we already alluded to it that mankind is supposed to have dominion over not only the fish of the sea but also over the fowls of the air

you remember the night of his crucifixion Jesus and Peter were having a conversation and Peter says to Jesus Lord you know I'll never deny you what did Jesus say back to Peter he says tonight Peter you will deny me before the

  32. rooster crows three times and as if it was on a perfect timetable right after Peter had denied Jesus that third time what did that rooster do it crowed was that a coincidence no that was Jesus proving that he had power not only

over the fish of the sea but also over the fowl of the air the Bible says mankind was created have dominion over the fish of the sea the fowl of the air and the beast of the field

remember that the week before Jesus crucifixion he's getting ready to go into the city of Jerusalem and he's going to make his triumphal entry

and he tells his disciples you know I'm going to need a beast to ride on I'm going to need an animal to ride on for this triumphal entry and so he tells his disciples I want you to find me a donkey on which a man has never ridden

  33. now I don't know about you but if I was to get on a donkey that a man had never ridden I probably wouldn't be on that donkey for very long but Jesus got on that donkey on which no man had ever ridden and he rode it

right into the city of Jerusalem as if he was riding on the best trained quarter horse that's ever been ridden what was he doing he was proving he had dominion over the fish of the sea over the fowl of the air over the beasts of the field

and you remember the Bible says that mankind was supposed to have dominion over all the earth Jesus proved during his earthly ministry that he had dominion complete control over the very elements themselves

you recall when the disciples were in that storm on the sea of Galilee they had no control over the situation they were so fearful and so scared that they resigned themselves to death we will die in this storm

  34. and Jesus just speaks a handful of words peace be still the wind stops blowing the rain stops falling the waves stop crashing and the boats stop rocking

those disciples look at Jesus and they say behold what manner of man is this that even the wind and seas obey him

Jesus has control over the fish of the sea he has control of the fowl of the air he has control of the beasts of the field he has control over the earth and all of its elements

but do you recall that I said there's one thing that we don't have control over that strikes more fear in our hearts than anything else and that's death

in Jesus's final demonstration of dominion over the created order and over the consequences of sin he performed his greatest miracle and it was far more magnificent than a fish it was far more significant than fowl it was far

  35. more significant than the elements of a nature or a beast in the field Jesus conquered the thing that we fear the most and that is death itself by subjecting himself to death dying publicly and visibly on a Roman

cross and dying in such a way that no one could mistake the fact that when his body came off that cross he was a lifeless corpse! And three days

later that body that once was dead was alive again by his own power and look with me again at verse 9 it says in verse 9 that Jesus was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death but he unlike man was crowned with glory and honor why?

That by the grace of God he should taste death for every man in other words what Jesus has accomplished is everything that we long to accomplish and yearn to accomplish but cannot accomplish and then by the grace of

  36. God for every man and woman and boy and girl that will believe on him he graciously and mercifully takes that accomplishment that none of us could achieve and then he turns around and gives it right back to us

2nd Timothy chapter 2 verse 12 says there's coming a day that those that believe on him will also reign with him

Romans 6 verses 2 and 3 tells us there's coming a day when the saints will have dominion over the world Daniel chapter 7 verse 27 listen to this verse the Bible says the kingdom and dominion and the greatness

of the kingdom under the whole of heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the most high whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and all dominions shall serve and obey him

there's coming a day in our Lord's future kingdom when those who are his people are going to rule and reign with him have that dominion that sin has kept us from achieving and we will have that dominion not

  37. because we're smart and not because we're strong and not because we're pure and not because we're righteous but because he is all of those things and in his earthly life in his substitutional death and in his bodily resurrection

he has dispensed grace back to us and he's given back to us all of those things that we lost in sin and the fall and so and I'm done tonight in a great sense in a sense that's far beyond you and I can understand

Jesus Christ is the ultimate clean up hitter how many of you understand in the batting lineup the fourth batter is always the best batter because you're hoping the fourth batter in the batting lineup in a baseball or softball

game will make up for all the mistakes of those that went before him and in a wonderful sense that's what Jesus is for us so what does that mean two things number one if you're here tonight you know

  38. Jesus Christ as your savior the antidote to that yearning in your heart for more is not some human achievement you'll never achieve enough

the achievement that will satisfy that yearning for more has already been fulfilled and accomplished by the person of Jesus Christ on the cross and he offers it to you as a free gift of grace and you must receive it the second application is this as believers

there are diseases that threaten you today but they won't threaten you forever there's death that frightens you today but it won't frighten you forever

there's corruption and chaos in this fallen world that appears to dominate you today but it won't forever forever because while we see not yet all things under our feet all things are already under his feet and therefore you and I can function and operate with peace

and with a sense of assurance and with a sense of confidence that whatever befalls us in this world doesn't shake us because the one who

  39. conquered verse number 14 we'll talk about this later in just a moment

and just tomorrow night but in verse number 14 the one who conquered death has destroyed the one that had the power of death that is the devil that he might free us from the bondage of fear there's nothing

that we have to be afraid of not because we have dominion over all things but because he has achieved dominion over all things let's bow our heads and close our eyes our brother will come and play the piano tonight for a moment of invitation

if your heads bowed and eyes closed maybe you're here tonight and the Lord spoke into your heart maybe he's spoken to your heart about something that you know I didn't even necessarily touch on but God's word and God's spirit just
